Johanna Caroline Friedrike Brennecke (Nuemeyer)

The following brief historical account of the beginnings of the Neumeyer Family in the United States is taken from the "Neumeyer History". We are especially indebted to the Neumeyer family for the excellent work they did in their book, "The Descendents of Karl and Caroline Neumeyer."

Caroline Brennecke was born in the Sebexen area of Germany (her birth records have not been found) on July 16, 1841. Her family came to America when she was about three years of age and they located on a farm west of Gordonville. It seems that there were many German families who settled in that vicinity. Caroline's brothers were Frederick, August, Heinrich, William, Charles, George, Frank, and Jake, and one sister, Louise. Caroline and Karl Neumeyer were married shortly after he returned from a California venture, on April 14, 1861 in the Gordonville Church.

Karl Neumeyer was born in Bernsdorf, Germany, February 1, 1833, the son of Herman and Christena Neumeyer. In 1851, when 18 years of age, he and a buddy, Fritz Meister, came to America. They left Germany to avoid a three-year military training requirement. They crossed the Atlantic on a sailing vessel, spending six weeks enroute. Karl often recalled that they encountered a severe storm. One night during a storm of several days duration, the ship drifted from course and by the light of the lightning they could see what appeared to be a rocky cliff. They were all afraid that the ship might be dashed against it and the captain also suspected and announced that all would probably be lost. Many on board prayed, including the rough sailors. Next morning they found themselves in the open sea.

On arrival in this country, Karl stayed with his older brother, John, for a brief period. John had come earlier and had settled on a farm west of the German Methodist Church at Gordonville, Mo. During the "gold rush", which had begun a few years earlier and continued to this time, Karl went to California hoping to make his fortune. He did not travel with the caravans across the country but took a boat at Cape Girardeau, Mo., and sailed down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. Here he boarded a ship and sailed around South America and up the west coast to Sacramento, California. In this area he hunted for gold and found dust which was valued at eleven hundred dollars. This he sewed into his vest which he wore both day and night. Even then there were attempts to rob him. [Editorial Note: The above is corroborated in a letter written by Karl Neumeyer to his brother-in-law, Heinrich August Julius Brennecke, in 1868. See chapter A].

Caroline bore Karl eleven children between 1863 and 1883. Caroline died August 24, l921. Karl died August 30, 1921, only six days after Caroline's death. Anna Brennecke Schaper said the two were so devoted to each other that Karl lost all desire to live when Caroline died.

Alvin & Helen Neuemeyer
By: Dorothy Ryburn & Audrey Parmenter

Alvin was raised on a farm in the Jackson, Missouri area, and as the oldest of six children had the responsibility of assisting his father with the farm tasks. He went to school at Tilsit and once told about the severe winters when he could skate across the fields to school. After graduation from high school, he left home to attend Chillicothe Business College. Then on to Kansas City in search of a job. He found one at the S & H Premium Parlor's Missouri Office.

Helen lived in Kansas City, Kansas until the age of eleven when her family moved to her father's ancestral home in Salt Creek Valley near Leavenworth, Kansas. This was a most exciting place for a city girl, and she had great fun climbing trees, exploring the creeks and playing in the barn with her sister and cousins.

Sometime after her graduation from high school, she and her family moved back to Kansas City, Kansas, where she went to work for the Kansas office of the S & H Premium Parlor Company. And so it was on the telephone, conducting business for their offices, that Helen and Alvin "met," and in time decided to meet in person. This led to their engagement.

World War I began, and Alvin joined the Navy as Seaman 2nd Class. With his college and business experience in accounting and bookkeeping, he became Payroll Master on a troop ship and made seven crossing to France. In later years, he was proud to say that he had spent his time when on leave in Europe exploring Paris and environs and had convinced several other sailors to join him, rather than "exploring" the local bars.

Meanwhile, during those war years, Helen went to work for Mr. J.C. Hall. This was the beginning of Hallmark Cards and the office and plant for production of the cards was on the second floor over T.M. James Jewelers in downtown Kansas City. She had many pleasant memories of her years there being a part of the building of that company.

After the war, Helen and Alvin were married, bought a house, and raised two girls, Dorothy and Audrey. Helen was a homemaker and Alvin worked as Office Manager for Isreal Transfer Company until his death at age 77. He didn't believe in retirement and died on the job.
