Chapter I -

George (Schoose) H. Brennecke

George H. Brennecke was born July 10, 1845, the first of the Brennecke children born in the United States. In the Jackson, MO Probate Court records concerning the estate of August Brennecke, one of the children listed was SCHOOSE/SCHOISE. Henry Sander of Cape Girardeau said that that was the German pronunciation for George.

George was married three times. On December 19, 1867, he married Christina Ludwig, who died December 18, 1882. The seven children from this marriage were Louis, Henry, Amelia (Langston), Bertha, Mary (Stroder), Albert, and Tina (Criddle).

On January 10, 1884, George married Johannie Reitman who died December 4, 1886. Their only children, twins, died at birth.

On August 23, 1888, George married Louisa Sperling Criddle. She outlived George and died December 16, 1936. There were no children.

The George Brennecke farm was on Stroder Branch, on State Highway UU. A great grandson, Carl Criddle, owns the farm now. He lives on the right side of the road, 1 1/2 miles on St. Highway UU, from Highway 34. His mother still lives on the (Criddle) home place across the road on the left. A few yards down the hill on the left is where the original George Brennecke home stood. There is a metal building where the cellar was located. On down the hill on the left is a row of trees where the three story basement type barn was. They could drive their wagons right into the third story (40 x 40) loft, then unhook the horses and take them outside or to the basement stalls. The only entrance to the basement was on the other side of the barn near the branch. The basement portion of the barn was 20 x 40, as was the second floor. The second floor had a hallway that you could drive on thru. When the new road was built the road and Stroder Branch were rerouted close in proximity to where the barn stood. The 1988 Brennecke Family book states the hewed stones of the basement type barn mark the site of the Brennecke homestead. Some of those stones were moved to the right of where the barn was standing by Carl Criddle, and some of them were covered up, so the trees on the hill mark the spot of the barn.

The three story barn (circa 1860) has a civil war history of its own. The most heavily traveled roads of that time in Southeast Missouri were not far away and stretched north to Ironton and Pilot Knob and eventually to Rolla where the route from Springfield to St. Louis could be intersected. The road south was the old Bloomfield Road which was the main road to Arkansas until the swampy area to the east was cleared and drained many years later. The barn was utilized by Union troops at various times during the war. As in other instances, it was common for them to take the good horses and leave the war-worn nags in trade. Many years after the war, Oda Criddle and Carl Criddle discovered 3 old cap and ball pistols hidden in the walls of the barn. Just up the lane was a natural spring where gypsies camped. On a rise, a quarter-mile west, is Stroder Cemetery. The first burial in this cemetery was a young gypsy boy who succumbed while his family was encamped at the spring.

George died March 23, 1924 and is buried in Fairview Cemetery north of Burfordville, MO.
