When my sons were young, each year I would make plans for our advent season. The calendar would fill with Christmas rehearsals and concerts, group events, school functions, and church activities. I would make sure to include a plan for some family devotion time daily. Some years I had a little Jesse tree on the microwave and we would add an ornament and read a relating Bible verse. Some years I would use candle holders with greenery on a plate as our “advent wreath” to light the candles and read a devotion. My best plans to include God in our every advent day were often squashed with children going in different directions and not everyone being there at the same time. I tend to beat myself up and feel downtrodden when my goals are not accomplished.

God knows the journey I need to take before I do. I may make plans and I just know in my heart He is happy that I make these goals, but He has His plan that sometimes coincides with mine and sometimes not. “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” Jeremiah 29:11.

Feeling as if I am a ball bouncing around in a pinball machine, determined to keep my plans, but being redirected, I rest in God’s promises that He is in control and His plans are for my best welfare, my best future, and full of hope. I sing, “till He appeared, and the soul felt its worth, a thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices!” (O Holy Night)
