3. A Journey to Unlikely Places

This is how we do it. We get up. Late. We rush around getting ready. We rush out the door. We never stop rushing. This is how we do it. This is how we spend our days. This is how we step through our life journey. We have great intentions of keeping God in our life and our minds all day, but we end up only thinking of Him when things turn difficult. We shoot up those small prayers (I call them arrow prayers) in our limited time. Things happen. Our plans for the day end up journeying into the most unlikely places. We start our day with intentions and goals and instead end up in the car shop, in the doctor’s office, in the computer repair shop, with our friend in tears, sitting alone in our own car in tears, stuck at work late, or calling the repairman. It feels as if anything that can go wrong will go wrong. We experience time delays and emotional rollercoasters. We feel we do nothing to get into these situations. They just come at us and “wham! bam! no thank you ma’am!” we find ourselves in unlikely places.

The good news is that God came on Christmas in an unlikely place. A manger. A feeding box for animals. “She gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn” (Luke 2:7). Jesus took a journey to an unlikely place as He entered the world. He started His earthly journey like we often feel in our daily journey. He knows how we feel because he experienced it Himself. “As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him” (Psalm 103:13). God who loves us so much understands our heart and knows our good intentions and, even in our rushing days, is right there with us when we end up in unlikely places, sending up those frantic prayers. He never leaves us. Oh, tidings of comfort and joy.
