5. Abigail’s Six Day Journey

Abigail’s six day journey of just being, being loved, being cuddled, and being in God’s Grace began on November 2, 2014. Our beautiful, precious granddaughter joined Jesus in heaven on November 8, 2014. Her six day journey here on earth gave me a personal, intimate, and deeper understanding of God. Right here, right now, in every moment, is enough. Jesus is enough. God’s grace is enough. “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Abigail lived her entire life near death. She was born with an outward appearance of perfection. Inside, her brain was too small to sustain basic life. At about 4 weeks inside her mother’s protective womb, the CMV virus caused Abigail’s brain to stop growing. We were blessed to be able to hold her for three days and to be there when she made her journey to heaven surrounded by family. She got to pass "go" and collect her heavenly life of eternity, missing all the yuck in the world.
When bad things happen, never ask “why,” but rather ask, “What is God teaching me.” I’ve done it so much it comes automatically to my mind. What did Abigail’s six day journey teach me? It is when we are first born and when we are near death that we are most dependent on others. When we are totally dependent on others that is when we are most vulnerable and surrender to God. When we strip away all else, we are left with our heart and flesh and Jesus. There is nothing else. When my heart and flesh fail, Jesus overcomes. When I am weak, I am strong with His power. I delight in boasting about Christ’s power. I think to myself, “If we can do it then, why can’t we do it with lesser thorns?” What is the opposite of “sufficient?” Why do we have to be so “self-sufficient?”
God’s purpose for Abigail in only six days was visible in that she touched many hearts across the country. How much more did God accomplish for His kingdom that was not visible to me?
Grandma loves you. We will see you again when we see Him.
