Lesson 11 - Buttons

Buttons are not as easy to make as it may seem!

I look forward to seeing your buttons!

(download button layer style - see video to learn how to use it.)

I was listening to this and heard myself say a few things wrong (ie. "layer style" instead of "layer thumbnail")! I think you will understand what I am saying regardless.

I found it VERY difficult to make buttons in Photoshop Elements. I tried for a long time this week. I realized that this was why I never did a button tutorial before. You would think it would be easy, but it is not.

Therefore, I played around in Photoshop (full version) for a long time and finally came up with a style that works. You may have other styles that work just as well, so utilize them also. I just wanted to make sure everyone had at least one style that worked so they could complete the lesson, so I have the download above. Just using the bevels provided with PSE does not work well at all.

In my opinion, extracting buttons is the best option. You can then recolor and use blending modes to change them.

For this lesson, please do TWO buttons, one from scratch as shown in the lesson and one that is extracted (as we learned how to extract the last lesson). Of couse, you can always do more as I'm sure some of you will be having fun creating!

Remember, buttons can come in shapes too, such as stars or hearts. In addition, you can utilize papers to make coordinating buttons. For instance, maybe make the rim with my layer style and then fill the center with paper. Find a layer style that makes that center paper like a soft bump.

In addition, I discuss strings in the video.

My mic headset was messed up again today when I recorded this, but i think I salvaged it. I sure didn't want to record it again for 25 minutes.

Below is the shortened version originally put on Youtube.

Here are your buttons!
