The Fun Extras - Set Three

48. Scrapping Process

I thought you might grow weary of clicking on links in lists, so today I have a thought-proving question for you regarding your process of scrapping.

When you begin a layout, do you start with the pictures and then choose a kit or do you start with a kit and find pictures to go with it? Do you start with a challenge and find the pictures or do you start with the pictures and find a challenge?

****

For me, I always start with my photos and then head out to find papers that work with it. However, if I'm doing a challenge, I have to go out and find photos that work with the challenge. That's why I don't like challenges too much as sometimes they make me do photos not already on my to-do list.

However, I am thinking that if I sometimes started with a kit, it might make me think "outside the box."

Here are your comments!

I'm kind of the same way you are, Hummie. It depends on the situation. A lot of times, I'll find a kit I really like, and I'll buy it and download it, then scour my computer for photos that will work. The last kit I bought was a dance themed kit, because my niece takes dance classes and has been wanting me to scrap a page for her. I am still waiting on my sister to give me some pictures! In other cases, I'll go out and get photos taken, and then come back and scour my stash for something to coordinate with them. Of course, when all else fails, I can recolor the kit to suit my needs. That's what's so great about digital! Dawn

I tend to start with the kit first and then go find a photo to go with it. I fiddle around a lot if the photo I thought would work with the kit and it does not, I then spend so much time trying to find another one. ccynden

I start with the phots. but with some of the lessons I look for ones that will work with them. if I know I have theme photos then I might look for a kit to go wiht them. Dawn Miner

I mainly do challenges, so I look for photos to go with them. Sometimes I have to think a little outside the box to find them. I only look for kits once I've chosen the photos. Sometimes, when I want to do a simple layout, I don't even bother with a kit, but use PSE supplied brushes, shapes, etc. JanetMM

It depends on so many things! lol If I'm looking at kits and a photo pops into my head, I'll grab the kit and usually do my layout right away. I don't buy a whole lot of kits anymore, but sometimes I just can't resist. If I have photos I want to scrap and don't find a kit right away that will work with them, I just make my own stuff up and sometimes end up with a kit that way. I do want to say that I have tons of CU actions, overlays, etc. I don't want you to think that I make everything from scratch for a layout. lol I just don't like to take a lot of time looking for a kit that will work with my pictures when I could be scrapping! If I'm going to do a challenge, I usually already have a photo in mind to scrap or the challenge makes me think of a certain photo. I guess in that case, the kit would depend on what the challenge is all about. pammyj

I start out with photos and then look for a kit. I don't usually participate in challenges - I've got so many things going on that I had to draw the line somewhere. Maybe when things quiet down a little....g_robb53

I start out with the photos usually, especially since I mainly scrap my grandkids. I do look for photos for challenges, esp. themed thursday or for the elements class. I keep those challenges/lessons written down so that when the right photo comes in I know where/how to use it. After I get the photos I want for a LO, I look through my kits for the right one, but sometimes I mix and match. I've been using some of my stash from the designer's class, too. belle33

Whether I start with a photo or a kit, it still revolves around the photos. If I pick out a kit, it is because I saw the kit and thought of photos I have that would work with the kit. When I start to scrap, I always start with photos and then pick a kit that has the right colors. When I do a challenge, I again will think about the theme of the challenge and then pick photos that will work and then find a kit that will work with the photos. NancyP

for me it's all about the photos! They inspire me! However, if I'm doing a CT page, sometimes I find it better to start with the kit and design the whole page and then choose a photo! When doing my own pages, if I have time I like to open up picasa and choose from all my digi stash whichever papers/elements I feel like using! But usually I'm pressed for time, so will then use one kit that I love! (I've become very ruthless in only buying/downloading kits that I love and know I will use!) For some of my LOs for classes here, I'm trying to use random photos that wouldn't otherwise nec. get scrapped immediately, and then try to theme the page around that, with maybe a quote and appropriate element(s). Most of all I love to be free to use whatever I want on a page - mix and match!!! Bernie x

I always start with my photos - altho I s'pose thinking about it, if I see a really nice kit, I might think oooh, I like that, have I got any pix that will work with it ? But if the answer's no, then I won't indulge. Mole

I mostly start with my photos and then either use a kit I've already got or indulge myself and buy a new one Janen

Don't laugh but I have never bought a kit so I guess the answer is simple. Because I scrap photos not kits again the answer is simple. When I look at those beautiful L/O's everyone makes that use kits I might buy one for fun. I don't really know how to use a kit so I don't feel I am missing anything (until I compare my L/O's with some of the amazing art work produced by others on this site). I am enjoying the process I use and sometimes it even looks good. P.S. It Saves Money doing it my way, Rodfather001

I just have an idea pop into my head and then I seem to be off........Occasionally a memory comes into my mind, a photo taken and then I work around that. lynnedbears

I start with my photos then find other things, some times things pop into my head and I have to work with it until I am happy . Jules

I like to start with my photos then get my kits. I do like to surf and look at LO and get ideas for different LO's. Then the fun begins. April

If I have to use a specific kit, I look for picts that go with it. Otherwise, I generally start with my photos first, then find a template and kit that will work with them. lulubelle

I almost always start with the photos. Then I count up how many photos I have to work with and look for a template, sketch or page map that will work with it. Then I'll come up with a theme or something I want to say about these photos, and THEN, and only then, I go looking for kits. Sometimes I'll take things out of a lot of different kits and sometimes I'll stick with just one kit. And, unfortunately for my bank account, I have been known to go surfing and buy a kit for a specific layout because I can't find anything in my stash that says what I'm trying to convey. I have occaisionally done a layout to fit the kit, but I don't generally like them. I'd rather fit the background to the theme instead of the other way around. craftmomma

Challenges have really helped me complete a layout. So I start with the challenge and find pictures to fit the cause. I also surf to look at others layouts for inspirations. 204cg

I definetly start with the photo and then fit the papers around them. I quite like challenges as often the themes behind them make me use photos I probably wouldn't have scrapped but as I am progressing through course 2 I am finding I am using fewer embellishments and journalling more so sometimes I cant meet the criteria of the challenge.
I confess to having bought kits that I wouldn't normally have done to marry up with a specific photo and sometimes I see a kit and think that I have a suitable photo to go with it but even then I still start the lo by opening the photos ab1bjm

I'm on a CT so the kit's the thing! But i have many photos, so never a problem to find one to go with. lovinlifegurl

I almost always start with the photos, but sometimes I have a kit that I really, really just want to use so I will try to find photos to go with it! JustaMommie

I almost always start with the challenge, then the photos and then the kit. but sometimes if the challenge is colour specific, I do the kit then the photo. jodyt

Hmmm...all of the above. Giggle. Sometimes I start with the photo, sometimes a challenge, sometimes a kit. It all depends on my mood. tammyshere

I generally start with the photos and then find a kit, or kits. If I have to use a certain kit, then I think over all the photos on my computer or in boxes to be scanned and grab something that strikes my fancy. I do not scrap photos in any order, just wherever the "spark" takes me. I have photos all the way from 1960 to 2012 to work with. Sometimes overwhelming, which is why I refuse to "scrap in order". nanscraps

Sometimes I start with photos, sometimes with a kit (depending on which elements are in the kit). I let my imagination go. Matching colors stays a priority in any case. AMarie
