Indian Summer & Storms

*written October 3, 2006

Tonight, I found this verse which peaked my interest:

Psalm 72:6 He will be like rain falling on a mown field, the showers watering the earth.

We are experiencing Indian Summer here. After having the air conditioning turned off for two weeks and the fresh air coming in the windows, the heat has returned and our air conditioner has been turned back on.

With the transition of the seasons, the weather also brings many showers and, often, rather strong storms. I just love to smell the rain in the air. I can often smell it before it arrives or before any other hint that a storm is coming.

The smell of rain in the air makes me take a pause in life as I stand there, gently and slowly bringing in the scent. It's such a relaxing scent. I think candlemakers and dryer softener people try to recreate the scent, but nothing in the world is quite like the real thing.

Freshly mown grass is the same way with a scent to relish all of its own. At this time of year, we actually call it leaf mowing, rather than lawn mowing, and the smell of the freshly ground leaves also makes me pause to soak in the smell.

As this Bible verse relates, it is even a different smell to combine rain falling and a mown field. So, what does this Bible verse really mean for me? .....that God will "be like rain falling on a mown field, like showers watering the earth?

Just like scents that cannot be duplicated by man into candles, God is like nothing in all the world. God also makes me take a pause in life as I gently and slowly bring in His love and warmth. Sometimes I imagine that He is giving me a hug. Just as the showers water the earth, God refreshes and replenishes me to stand for another day in this life.

Take a moment, close your eyes, and take a deep breath. Imagine a unique smell that you love. How unique is your God to you?
