Genesis 1:1-5

1:1-5 DAY ONE void earth, darkness/night, light/day, waters deep

The darkness was over the deep -- deep is translated as "chaos as a surging mass of shapeless matter" which is commonly understood as the restless water (oceans).  Water takes on the shape of where it is contained, hence it is shapeless.

The Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters, hence water was created and covering the void earth (because dry land was not created yet when waters are separated on day 3).  The Holy Spirit was present at creation.

How can there be light without the sun?  God can create light without a secondary source.  Darkness is the absence of light. For it to be "day one" there would have to be a period of dark time and a period of light time.
