Dear sons: Calm Words from my Heart

*written 5/3/2010

With three sons, this song entitled "Boys" jumped out at me. It's such a calming song. I've worked hard at staying calm through much teen drama lately. I can almost hear my own heart calmly saying some of these lyrics to my own boys.

So you know who you are, and you know what you want
I’ve been where you’re going, and it’s not that far
It’s too far to walk, but you don’t have to run
You’ll get there in time

Dear sons, I know you want so much to be out of the house and on your own. I want nothing more than for you to be successful, independent young men. In fact, I think I want it for you more than you do. You will get there in time. Don't run. Instead, think first and prepare. I know what you want. I've been there myself. But if you run off willy nilly without first going through certain steps, your life will be much harder. First, you must have your own car -- with no debt. Second, you must have an secondary education so that you may secure a job with enough income to support yourself and a family. Third, you must know who you are. This time in your life is the hardest time in life as it is no easy task to learn who you are. Finding yourself will lead your footsteps of tomorrow.

Lesson three: You’re not alone
And since I saw you start breathing on your own

Dear sons, You have no idea how much I love you. You have no idea how I've given my every day, my every activity, my every moment for you. I'm letting you spread your wings, ready to fly, but this does not mean you have to be so hurtful as you push away in order to take flight. Push gently. I'll let you go. But you will never be alone. I will always be there for you to catch you when you flutter. I want you to soar in happiness, not flutter in distress. I've always wanted that for you -- since the moment you first started breathing on your own.

Not to undermine the consequence but you are not what you do
When you need it most, I have a hundred reasons why I love you

Dear sons, As you are on the crossroads of life, as high school graduates, you will think a lot about what you will do with your life. Remember that you are not what you do. You are what you are inside. As long as you love the Lord, as long as you have a good heart, as long as your intentions are always forthright, I will have a hundred reasons and more why I love you. I won't love you for what you do. I will always love you for who you are. So I wish and hope for the best and easiest life for you, but even if life fails you, I will still always love you.

Love, Mom

~~~~~~~~~~~~~P.S. -- Are there any other mothers out there near tears now. I am. Oh, for those sentimental, sappy moments that boys will never understand!
Boys (by Jars of Clay)
Lesson one: Do not hide
Lesson two: There are right ways to fight
And if you have questions we can talk through the night
So you know who you are, and you know what you want
I’ve been where you’re going, and it’s not that far
It’s too far to walk, but you don’t have to run
You’ll get there in time
Lesson three: You’re not alone
And since I saw you start breathing on your own
You can leave, you can run
This will still be your home
So you know who you are, and you know what you want
I’ve been where you’re going, and it’s not that far
It’s too far to walk, but you don’t have to run
You’ll get there in time
Get there in time
In time
To wonder where the days have gone
In time
To be old enough to wish that you were young
When good things are unraveling, bad things come undone
You weather love and loose your innocence
There will be liars, and thieves who take from you
Not to undermine the consequence but you are not what you do
When you need it most, I have a hundred reasons why I love you
So you know who you are, and you know what you want
I’ve been where you’re going, and it’s not that far
It’s too far to walk, but you don’t have to run
You’ll get there in time
So you know who you are, and you know what you want
I’ve been where you’re going, and it’s not that far
It’s too far to walk, but you don’t have to run
You’ll get there in time
Get there in time
If you weather love and lose your innocence
Just remember, Lesson one…
