Isaiah 52:13-15

This page begins a Lenten study by Visual Faith Ministry in 2023. I greatly enjoyed my time with this study. I prepared three graphics each week. Although my practice is to great digital works, this year I did the graphics by hand with pens, pencils, and a glue stick. The graphics I cut out were available from Visual Faith Ministry as well. I do not like my work by hand as much as digital, but I did enjoy my time in the Word each week. This page will act also as an index to the other pages in this study.

The Two Servants; Lord’s servant? Which is it, Jesus or Israel?  42:1-6 follows 41:8-9 and 49:3 as the "servant of the Lord," who is Israel. The servant Israel fails and God responds to the people by sending THE Servant of the Lord,  "my Servant," Jesus. Both Israel and Jesus are called servants. 42:1-6 is about Jesus as a response to the sins of Israel in the verses before.

A new Servant was sent by God who was everything that the first servant was not.

--Isaiah 41:8-9 But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham, my friend; you whom I took from the ends of the earth, and called from its farthest corners, saying to you, “You are my servant, I have chosen you and not cast you off”;

--Isaiah 49:3  And he said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.”

Response to Israel sinning: Deuteronomy 28-58-61 “If you are not careful to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that you may fear this glorious and awesome name, the LORD your God, then the LORD will bring on you and your offspring extraordinary afflictions, afflictions severe and lasting, and sicknesses grievous and lasting. And he will bring upon you again all the diseases of Egypt, of which you were afraid, and they shall cling to you. Every sickness also and every affliction that is not recorded in the book of this law, the LORD will bring upon you, until you are destroyed.

42:1-6 is also a  response to Israel sinning only this time we see Jesus's suffering in place of our suffering.

Exaltation comes before humiliation in these verses. So it is today in that in the end, Jesus is victorious for all. Forgiveness trumps. Jesus triumphs. Assurance of hope.

Behold – See this person! In this verse (hiné - Here is, here's. Lo, behold, hinne, hinneh) is best translated as "behold," but in other Bible verses it can be used as a response from the person addressed to indicate the readiness of that person to listen or obey. This is a reminder to be ready to listen and obey.

My Servant – significant words; "my" as in God the Father sent His Son, in Matthew 12:16 Jesus is chosen by God, "my" beloved with whom my soul is well pleased. Both Israel and Jesus are chosen and called.

Prophesy, promises fulfilled. Scripture interprets Scripture. Matthew 12:16-21 references 42:1-5 and states it is a prophecy fulfilled in Jesus. "and ordered them not to make him known. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah:  “Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles. He will not quarrel or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets; a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory; and in his name the Gentiles will hope."

Suffering Servant – His appearance was so marred beyond human semblance (ouch; disfigured) and His form beyond that of the children of mankind (could not recognize He was human) Luke 22:63-64 – blindfolded and struck Him on the face

Love.  So shall He sprinkle many nations (baptism) Ezekiel 36:25 I will sprinkle clean water on you and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses.

Glory – He shall be high and lifted up (in more ways than one, double meaning, lifted high on the cross and exalted in glory lifted up higher than all and shall be exalted

King of Kings – Kings shall shut their mouths because of Him because they now understand what they have heard (speechless)
