Mayotte

Regis Marechal (Richard Marshall) was the illigitmate child of Louis Benoit Camile (Benoist) Marechal and a half-breed Indian whose father was a Mayotte. Who were the parents of this half-breed Cahokian Indian? Her father would have had the surname of Mayotte and her mother would have been a Cahokia Indian. It would seem that these two were married because their child (the mother of Richard Marshall) has the last name of Mayotte. Can I find their marriage record? Can I find Richard's baptims records?

On this working page I plan to collect information on the early Mayotte families around Cahokia and St. Louis in hopes that learning more about the families I can one day connect the dots.

Here are the other spellings for Mayotte: Maillet.

I read the book "French and Indians of Illinois River" by Nehemiah Matson and made notes. Although I learned a lot about the history of Peoria, Starved Rock, and the Illinois Indians as it relates to my Indian heritage, I am left with more questions than answers as to how it may related to my Mayotte family.
