Oenothera macrocarpa (formerly O. missouriensis) | Missouri (Evening) Primrose, Night Candles
Onagraceae (Willowherb or Evening Primrose Family) Pronounced Oh-nah-GRACE-ee-eye
Pronounced Ee-no-theer-uh Mac-row-car-pah
The name "onagracea" is possibly from the Greek words "oinos theras" which mean "wine-seeker" referencing the ancient use of the roots in scenting wine.
The name "macrocarpa" means "large-fruited."
This is a native Missouri plant. I had it one time and it lasted for a few years and then it died. I think I would like to have another one someday in my garden.
The height is 6 to 10 inches which is perfect for me. It is a floppy plant more than an upright plant, so as I remember, it did need some space in the garden bed.
The flowers are large and showy with lemon-yellow blooms. The common name of "Night candles" is because of the glowing nature of the flowers.
The flowers have 4 petals.
The flowers last one day, usually opening in the late afternoon and finishing after the next morning.
I read that the flowers begin in Spring and last until August or Autumn, but that is not what I remember mine doing.
