The genus Latin name ("campanula"), meaning 'small bell', refers to the bell-shape of the flower,

Most nurseries no longer sell this plant because it is invasive and hard to irradicate. If you pull the flower and any of the tuberous rhizomes are left in the ground, it will continue to grow. The flower was probably marketed as easy to grow and hard to kill, but these are actually negatives. They also thrive were other plants will not thrive as they tolerate drought conditions.

I only had this plant one year and I love the photos I took of it. It probably got weeded as a weed when it was not well identified and that is a testament to how well we weed our garden beds!

The purple flowers are beautiful though! I do love the little bells along the long stem.

Campanula americana | American Bellflower looks similar and is not invasive. The flowers are bluish purple and have a fringed edge.
