Centaurea cyanus | Bachelor Buttons, Cornflower
Asteraceae (Daisy and Sunflower Family) (Pronounced ass-ter-AY-see-eye )
Pronounced sen-TAR-ee-ah Sigh-AN-us
The common name of "Bachelor's Button" references the old-fashioned practice of bachelors putting the flower in a buttonhole when they were courting and if the flower died quickly, it meant that their love was not returned.
The common name "Cornflower" references their prevalence in the cornfields in Europe.
The flowers are bright blue and fringed, and round like a thistle. While best known for their bright blue, they now also come in pink, purple, burgundy, white, and two-toned.
These flowers are edible.
These flowers are annuals and bloom 6 to 8 weeks after planting seeds.
Deadheading helps to produce more blooms, but allow some flowers to stay to save some seeds for planting the next year.
It seems I planted these by seed again since 2019, but they have not grown. I like them and do want to try again.
