Chaenomeles speciosa | Japanese Quince

Chaenomeles speciosa | Japanese Quince

Rosaceae (Rose family) (Pronounced roe-ZAY-see-eye)

Pronounced kah-NOM-uh-leez    Juh-PON-ih-ka(connected with Japan)

The word "Chaenomelis" is a Greek word "chaino" meaning "to split" and the word "melon" meaning "apple" because the fruit of the plant was thought to split open.

This is a deciduous shrub with lovely red flowers in the Spring.

It was at the corner of our house in the back yard when we moved here in 1986. I kept it for a long time, but it was not showy enough for me and we eventually took it out. I wish we would have moved it instead of taking it out because I think it was the location that was more of a problem than the shrub.

The name "Japonica" (as in Chaenomeles japonica) was widely used for this plant in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Wow! Our back yard was SO different back then. I see that big shop building the neighbor's built is already there in 2001.
