Hyacinthus orientalis | Hyacinth (see page 52 for Grape Hyacinth)
Asparagaceae (Asparagus Family) (Pronounced ah-spare-a-gay-see-eye)(formerly Hyacinthaceae Family) (subfamily Scilloidea) (formerly of the Liliaceae (Lily Family) (Pronounced Lil-ee-a-see-eye)
Pronounced Hi-a-SIN-thus Or-ee-en-TAL-is
The name Hyacinth is from Greek mythology legend in that Apollo, the god of sun, gave the name to the flower which grew from the blood of one of his followers, Hyakinthos, when he was killed.
Hyacinths, especially the deep purple and pink, are one of my favorite flowers. They smell so good even if you just walk by them. I love to sit on the swing and let the aroma waft by me.
These bulbs are planted in the Autumn to bloom in the Spring.
Hyacinths have four to six stiff leaves and one huge flower comes up in the middle of them. It is propagated by bulblets on the main bulb.
They are not poisonous to animals, generally non-toxic, so they are a great choice around pets. Even so, squirrels do NOT prefer to eat them.
2024
I only took a few photos in 2024 because I was so busy filming. This is a back of a chair that was randomly stuck in the garden a previous year and it made for an interesting vignette.

This is a Hyacinth in front of Grape Hyacinths.
This one is an oddball!

There are some Virginia Bluebells in the middle of these Hyacinths.

I left this photo in because it shows what the bulbs look like just after breaking the ground.
