Dark-eyed Junco

2025

#4 of 11 birds in my snowy garden is the Junco. They are a favorite of mine and show up only in the cold months. I like them for a lot of reason. They are so small and yet so strong as they hold their own around the other birds. They are brave and rarely intimidated by other birds, kind of like I wish I were. I love white and the contrast between their white bellies that get lost in the snow and their grey backs is something I find pleasing. I like that the male and female are not so different as that represents equality. They do not hoard the feeders, but rather wait patiently hopping around on the ground to eat what has been left for them by the other birds. I love they way they hold onto upright sticks and stand so confidently. I love how they twist their heads to look around without moving their body. I love that they visit my garden all day long and not just in the morning and dusk. I love that they are kind birds, never fighting with each other or other birds. They manage to exist in a world with fragments of ugly and never waiver from who they are. Do you see why I like them so much, beside the fact that they are just adorable? February 2025
