Heuchera sanguinea | Coralbells, Alumroot

Saxifragaceae (Saxifraga Family) Pronounced Saks-uh-fray-gay-see-eye

Pronounced HEW-ker-a

Saxifraga is Latin meaning ‘rock breaker’ referring to some of the plants' ability to grow on exposed rock.

Heuchera is named after a German physician, botanist, and medicinal plant expert Johann Heinrich von Heucher.

Coralbells refers to the bell-shaped flowers.

Alumroot refers to the medicinal use as an astringent to stop bleeding. The Native Americans used it in this way.

Heuchera sanguinea (San-GWIN-ee-ah) is a common species. Sanguinea means 'blood red' referring to the color of the flowers, although some are pink.

The leaves are heart-shaped and round-like. Coral bells are popular because of the color the leaves bring to the garden.

Flowers are on panicles and are bell-shaped. Deadheading the flowers encourages reblooming.

Prefers morning sun and afternoon shade.

In warmer climates the foliage stays green year round. Here in Missouri the evergreen-ness depends on how low our temperatures get in the Winter and whether it is a mild or hard Winter.

Clumps should be divided in the Spring every 3 to 4 years, otherwise the plant can be short lived.

There are many species of Coralbells. Here are some I have planted:

Heuchera x villosa 'Carnival' | Hairy Alum Root

I planted this species in 2021. It is further back in the shade garden. It was blooming on April 17, 2024, with the other early ones.

Carnival species is known for its large and hairy lobes on the leaf and its hairy stems.

This species blooms late Summer, much later than most species.

My plant has green leaves with red flowers that have a white and yellow center.

My tag just says 'Carnival,' however it comes in many varieties. I am researching to determine my variety.

This photo shows that the Carnival is hairy.

This is the flower on my Carnival. It is red with white and yellow centers.

Heuchera Coral Bells

I purchased this one in in 2021 and the tag is not descriptive. It has green leaves and classic red flowers. It has a hairy stem and hairy leaves. Leaves are not as large as my Carnival which is also hairy. This is blooming on April 17, 2024 with the other early ones.

Heuchera 'Georgia Peach' PP19375

I planted this species in 2022. I love this one! This was blooming on April 10, 2024.

This plant has light purple-red (peach) foliage with dark lines. The blooms are white. It is not hairy.

This photo was taken in 2023. It is interesting that it is in the back yard. This may be a different one that died.

This one is not hairy!

Heuchera Dolce 'Wildberry'

I planted this species in 2022.

This plant has dark purple foliage and white flowers.

This photo was taken in 2022.

These photos were taken in 2024. It is just beginning to bloom on April 17, after the Georgia Peach and the unknown generic varieties.

Heucherella Fun and Games 'Eye Spy' Foamy Bells

I planted in 2023.

This plant is 8 to 10 inches high and blooms late Spring to early Summer.

This plant has light green foliage and bubblegum-color flowers.

I believe I moved this one to the back yard in 2024. I am going to watch what it does and update this with photos.
