The Fun Extras - Set One

2. Rewarding Yourself

Discussions can be a great motivator to make you think of new things to get your scrapbooking on a roll again.  We will visit many discussions in this class.  What better way to get to know your classmates better too?

Where will we go next time?  Oh, that's the fun of it!  Just wait and see!

Two questions:

1. In order to motivate yourself to get a page done that you just do not feel like doing, you decide to treat yourself to a reward when you get it done. What would that reward be?

2. Do you ever use digital scrapbooking as a reward for other tasks you do not feel like doing? What tasks?

***

Oh, when I first started scrapbooking, that is what kept me motivated too. I could post it in the Yahoo Group and immediately feedback would come. I would print it and lay it on the coffee table and my men always seemed anxious to see and read it. It kept me wanting to do more.

I seem to have lost that now. Even when I upload to the gallery here I do not get many comments and rarely are they immediate feedback.

Praise can go a long way, can't it?

Your replies...

Jaclin My reward is just the pleasure of sharing it with someone else that is willing to compliment me on it. That is what keeps me motivated. Love it when someone else really likes it or appreciates it. That is my reward.

No is my answer to question 2.

***

Question #1. I reward myself by actually printing out my layout and showing it to my family or emailing it to those out of town. If I am not thrilled with what I have done, no one sees it but me and I never mention it. The compliments are very thrilling.

Question #2. No. ccynden

***

My reward would be to spend some time just playing around in Photoshop playing with tools and effects, instead of having a purpose.

I don't use digital scrapbooking as a reward. I do tend to use it as a relief from longish spells of intense genealogical research. JanetMM

***

l. I don't remember ever doing a layout that I didn't want to do, but if it ever happened, I think my reward would be to treat myself to something sweet and yummy!!! Ohhhhh, I'm so bad with the sweets!!!!

2. Yes! Happening right now! I have to get the whole house clean today for the weekend. So I clean for 1/2 hour and then play on the computer for 1/2 hour. Been doing it all day since early this morning (which is why I am here now!) and the house is almost done!!! :o)
OK, times up----back to work! See you in a 1/2 hour!!!!! NancyP

***

I'm w/Nancy...usually sitting down to digi-scrap is the reward rather than the other way around (so YES to #2). For cleaning house is usually mine also, lol! Or when I have work on the computer (actual paying work!) I take a break to scrap. I guess my reward if I didn't enjoy doing a LO would be sharing it w/my hubby who is so complimentary on the pages I show him. froggymamma

***

No rewards for me. I just like knowing that sometime in the future, someone will be admiring my scrapping. I guess I do like learning all the features of Photoshop along the way. DigiDeborah

***

omg Hummie, I gained 5 lbs. just seeing that picture! No rewards for me, either. Unless maybe to take the time to go browse through some stores to see if anything catches my eye. I rarely have time for that anymore. I agree that positive feedback is a great reward! The other day I was leaving work and a guy coming in stopped me and told me he really likes what I do with my pictures (I post a lot of my layouts on facebook). I'm going to take one of the books I've had made in so he can see what I actually do with them. I think he may be interested in giving it a try.  pammyj

Chocolate and oh mom that's cool.

2. Do you ever use digital scrapbooking as a reward for other tasks you do not feel like doing? What tasks?
No. I do digiscrapping to unwind at end of day. And to prepare the past for my kids and I like to learn new stuff ie, PSE. dlynne

***

i love the end result- reminding me of my kids when they were tiny
is my reward- it's like i can feel their hugs with small cubby arms all over again

1. In order to motivate yourself to get a page done that you just do not feel like doing, you decide to treat yourself to a reward when you get it done. What would that reward be?

I don't really reward myself - having the time, peace and quiet, plus the fun of doing things in the software is my reward, LOL! I do still get a buzz from posting LOs on my blog though, even though I'm sure they're rarely seen, LOL!!

2. Do you ever use digital scrapbooking as a reward for other tasks you do not feel like doing? What tasks?
Not really! I do have to force myself to do housework for ten mins (LOL!!!) first before starting to scrap when I have a free day!

Digiscrapping is so much a part of my day generally - way more than paper scrapping could be (space/mess constraints with 2 kids around!) - that it just exists alongside other stuff - there's no bargaining with it, LOL!!

My reward for motivating myself is the smile on the faces of my daughters in law when they say ahh and smile at the finished layout.

And my reward for tasks I don't feel like doing is plodding on sorthing my digi elements into Acdsee it's taking sooo long, I refurbish houses and I actually do knock walls down, so the exremes are rewarding in themselves

I don't really reward myself as it is all so new to me that I use digi scrapping as my reward after all the boring tasks I have to do

Scrapping is my way to relax. I don't really reward myself after scrapping, but scrapping is a reward of sorts, I guess.

Scrapping is my hobby, but is always put on the back burner while I'm teaching. Summer is awesome for me to get more time to scrap. My reward for scrapbooking is always the way it makes me feel and then the joy of others who see the pages I make about them. I love documenting life this way.

As far as jobs I don't want to do that I reward myself with scrapping.....that one is easy. Laundry! My laundry room and my scrapbook room is right next to each other and I will scrap all day until the laundry is done. (I make sure to go through the house and find every possible item that needs washed on those days so I can scrap longer!! hehe)

1--my reward right now, is just seeing what I have learned and showing my family

2-- No ,but I do have to do things before I sit down or they might not get done.

Thanks for the yummy reward, Hummie! Photos are the only reward I can accept right now since I'm trying to get into shape for my annual physical.
1. For my reward, I just think about why I decided to start scrapping that page. If it's not working for me, I change it - which makes digiscrapping so much more fun!

2. Yes, I use digiscrapping as an excuse not to clean up. It's only a temporary reprieve, but it makes me feel good for a little while.

1. My reward is having some free time to digiscrap in the afternoons.

2. No

For me I some times have to push myself to get started, but after that I get right into it and really enjoy it. So as of yet I don't have to reward myself to do a page. I suppose the reward is knowing that what I deo is for the kids in the future, to record our history so that if something happens to me the kids, and hubby know they were loved and that I loved my life.

Sometimes I use digi scrappin to reward myself for getting the housework done, but mainly I use it as a way to keep my mind active while my body does it's healing thing, however long it takes.

Cheers

#1--The only times I've needed to be motivated for specific pages is for a few of the challenges in Themed Thursday. My reward has been the wonderful comments for those LO's. The positive reinforcement does go a very long way!

#2--Not really, but I do use it to postepone doing tasks around the house! If I can get the laundry and cleaning etc. done before I sit at the computer, I don't feel guilty about scrapping all day!

PS--Thanks for the treats, Hummie! Very dietetic that way!

The reward I get is the feeling of accomplishment I get when I'm done. Nothing like it. Digital scrapping is a way for me to relax so after a particularly stressful week I get to Scrap.

A #2: I reward myself by scrapping when I get a load of laundry and dishes done. I hate doing those!

Sometimes I use it to reward myself after I get the school tasks done!

Q 1 - Playing a game on the computer.
Q 2 - No.
Thanks for the treat Hummie. I can eat icecream any time of the year even when the temperature gets down to 0°C which it was this morning. Sorry I haven't done any lessons but my computer has been back to the repair shop and now has a new CPU and motherboard and my bank account is very much lighter!!

I usually scrapbook only pages which I want to do. Sometimes I do get stuck on a page, so I just put it to one side knowing that at a later date I will go back and finish it off - no problem.
Scrapbooking to me is a reward in itself although it does often take over from the housework.

question #1- i would reward myself by showing my layout to everyone who walks in the door. people who dont digi scrap have no idea how much we poor of ourselves into our scrapping.
question #2- i tell myself that i can scrap after i get at least some house work done when i get home from work.

debbie46

***

If I don't feel like scrapbooking, then I feel under no compunction to do it, so the issue doesn't really arise. I do most of my digi stuff during me breaks at work, and it's a pleasant diversion, so no coercion or reward is needed.

The same applies to the second question, too, really. I don't think of doing digi scrapping as reward - and the same applies for my 'in the flesh' scrapbooking and cardmaking.

Mole

1. In order to motivate yourself to get a page done that you just do not feel like doing, you decide to treat yourself to a reward when you get it done. What would that reward be?
My reward would be to do an artistic page that I've got stuck in my head, I also like uploading my layouts to groups and stuff and hearing what others think about it, as well as what my kids and family think of it that's what really motivates me.

2. Do you ever use digital scrapbooking as a reward for other tasks you do not feel like doing? What tasks? Yes, when I have to do other things on the computer like typing, I'll reward myself for completing some pages or something by doing some scrapping. Like a lot of Scrapbookers my life is centered around scrapping. Like if I see something in a magazine even a ad, I'm like I can scrap that, or I will dress my kids in something I know I have a kit or traditional stuff that will match. I am bad. LOL

Since I am so new to digi scrapping I am finding that everything is a reward to me. Learning a new shortcut in PSE, learning a cool technique to make a LO look great, designing a LO that amazes even me...(Did I really create that?) Everything is so fresh and new to me that I am loving the learning and creating LO along the way. I have so many pictures that need attention that I haven't come across anything yet that I just don't want to do, my problem....I want to do it ALL!

I am finding that I need to pace myself with how much time I spend doing scrapping otherwise nothing would get done at my house. I use it as a reward when the day is done to have some unwinding time just for me. I loved what Nancy said about working for a half an hour and then reward herself for 1/2 an hour. I will have to try that!

April

***

#1: I don't use digi scrapping as a reward but, I do get a rewarding feeling when I have completed a lesson or page. Oh, and I just love, love, love it when I learn something new!

#2: I, definately, use this medium to relax after I get done what needs to be done. Actually, to be honest, I have been known to let some things go and just SCRAP!! Just keeping it real!!!

MalinB

***

1. Just having a page done that I am happy with is all the reward I need. I do enjoy it when people leave comments and critiques on the pages I've done.

2. Since I have just joined the work force again after 24 1/2 years, I am always short on time. So, I will set the timer for 15 minutes and buzz around and get chores done and than set the timer again and scrap. Somehow I am always willing to stop when the timer goes off the first time but when I am scrapping I have a tendency to ignore the timer!

tlcmom

***

1. A nap sounds pretty good to me!
2. What chores? I'm not much good at doing tasks that need to be done. Besides, that's what retired husbands are for!!! I'd much rather do crafts.

I just start playing around to get myself started. my reward is showing my family my results.

I don't usually have a "reward" for doing a layout that I didn't want to do. I usually just put it off until I'm ready to do it if I can. LO! However, I think the best reward is getting it done and being pleased with the results.

I definitely use scrapping as a reward! I try to make sure that I get my papers graded first, and then get on to download my usual freebies from Tiggconn and the Scrapping Sisters, or scrap a layout. It does give me something to look forward to!

lulubelle

***

1. The reward for me is the challenge of it all. That is why I love it here. I am given an assignment then it gets my creative juices going. It’s fun to create. Another BIG reward is preserving memories. I love looking back at stories and pictures that have been scrapped.
2. I always use scrapping as a reward! Clean for an hour scrap a bit. Etc etc etc.

ndalton

***

1. I don't motivation is my problem as much as my ablity to create; use the right color combinatiions to bring out my page etc. I think I spend to much time on something that coulda soulda been completed in a 30 minutes or so. I am using the Pioneer group this go around as motivation to complete my lessons and stay with the group. 2. I never thought about a reward system. Let me think on that. Have a great evening everone.

My reward would have to be a glass of wine while scrappin, please dont get the wrong idea im not really a alc********** but i do have a weakness for a glass of wine lol

Quite often I find myself scrappin when I should be doing something else, so that is very definately a yes for me.

Chrissy

***

Oh, if I don't want to do a layout, I don't do it. Simple as that. This is a hobby, not a torture device. ;) My family would be just as happy to look at simple pictures as nice layouts, so I have no outside pressure.

As for using scrapping as a reward, bingo! I've made myself "FLY" through a good many house cleaning sessions by going back and forth between the squeegee and the mouse. I hate breaking my concentration, but it's worth it.

mawkinberd

***

As I only scrap for myself and pleasure I only create lo's that I want to. I'll admit sometimes a lo will come together better than at others but if I get stuck I leave it for a few days and then come back to it and usually finish it off. If its not working at all I scrap it all together and start afresh. By doing Hummies courses I have probably produced lo's using photos and ideas that I wouldn't have done previously but far from not wanting to do them I have broadened my horizons and thought outside the box. Even so a nice reward doesn't go amiss in any circumstance and I'm with Chrissy and her glass of wine but could probably manage a chocolate or two and a nice comment is bliss.

Like most people who have commented I pace myself with my digi scrapping. I try to get all my hw/jobs done in the morning so that by lunchtime my conscience is clear and the rest of the day is mine. If the laptop jumps off the table to take up it's rightful positin on my knee then so be it

I don't do LOs i don't want to do, yet. Haven't been called on to do one. Wait, yes i have, and i haven't done it yet either. And i think the motivation, if it ever comes, will be the good feeling that the person i'm doing the album for will have when it's done. Clearly she's seen something in my work that she likes or she would not have asked. So, i need to think about that and get moving.

Yet i do understand what Hummie said when she said hardly anyone comments on her work anymore and that when they do it's not instantaneous. I know the feeling, which is why i like the 5/1 rule and which is why i am going to apply it as often as i am able. People DO like to be appreciated, or if not appreciated, NOTICED. Sometimes, when i think i have done really well on a LO, i'll wait for the flood, which rarely happens (i am a legend in my own mind...), and sometimes that is discouraging and reversely motivating, if that makes any sense.

I don't think scrapping is a reward, but it is a great stress reliever to work slowly on a LO (which is why it takes me 2.5 hours to complete a speed scrap, LOL), and i guess the relief of stress is its own reward. I will often, when i'm trying to create an exam, or having to weed job applicants, do what others have talked about: work 1/2 hour, scrap 1/2 hour, until i'm through it.

Thanks for the treat, Hummie.

lovinlifegurl

***

I like the 5/1 rule also.
1. I make my grands scrapbooks of their life during the year for Christmas. Digital scrapbooking has made this task a lot easier. Hummie's world helps make the books pop. Motivation, The expresssion when they open the books and make the statement Grandma I forgot that picture.
2. No I do not use scrapbooking as a reward.

204cg

***

1. that situation does not really apply. I've found that if i can't get motivated on a page, its most likely because the page is headed in the wrong direction. I usually put it away for a few days. Sometimes I can go back to the page and fix it, but more often I start something different with the same picture(s).

2. Emphatically, yes! The dishes, scrubbing the bathroom, mopping floors--I hate housework, have I mentioned?

Craftmomma

***

1# I have never thought about it in terms of a reward. If I have to work with something that I am not really liking, I just knuckle down and do it... I guess my reward to myself would be, just getting it over and done with.

2# LOL no I use it as something to do INSTEAD of doing what I should be doing.

jodyt

***

Well, if I had to think of something, it might be a nice dinner out with my family.

I've never used scrapbooking as a reward for getting something else done, but just recently i have thought about doing that, so i don't feel guilty for sitting down half the day and scrapping! It may be something I implement soon. I was thinking getting all the dishes/laundry/schoolwork done before I'm allowed to scrap.

JustAMommie

***

1. I've learned that my reward is posting in a Gallery and hoping someone will make a nice comment. Which reminds me that I need to comment more myself.
2. No, but I do use it as an excuse to postpone housekeeping. I suppose I 'should' do a little housework first so I can use scrapbooking as a reward for that.

A reward to motivate me is sometimes to go buy a new kit or look for some freebies to use in a LO! Even though I have quite a bit of kits I can't always seem to find that PERFECT paper or element so I go "shopping"! The I feel like I HAVE to use what I bought!

Yes, I use digi-scrapping as a reward for doing housework, but more than likely I have to push myself away from the computer and say "I'll be back!".

1) I'm one of those scrappers that finds digital scrapbooking so relaxing and fun that I don't even think of rewarding myself. Any layout I've created has been reward enough. I never want to stop when I'm scrapping!!!
2) I have used digi-scrapping as a reward for completing housework. Since I work full-time, my Saturday mornings have been: scrap 1/2 hour...clean 1/2 hour. Generally by afternoon my cleaning is done and I can scrap the rest of my Saturday.

1. In order to motivate yourself to get a page done that you just do not feel like doing, you decide to treat yourself to a reward when you get it done. What would that reward be?

I don't think that happens. I do get stuck not being able to make a layout work. I get my reward first because I go shopping for a new kit to use, either online or through my stash. I find that very rewarding and motivating all at once.

2. Do you ever use digital scrapbooking as a reward for other tasks you do not feel like doing? What tasks?

I haven't yet but I will try it, when I tear myself away from the computer.

I am always motivated to scrap.....its housework I need to get motivated for!! If I get housework done I reward myself with ice cream and scrapping lol.
I never feel like cleaning.....I always dream of winning the lottery and hiring Molly Maid to clean for me. When I get cleaning done I scrap, scrap scrap.
We need self cleaning houses!!!

1. In order to motivate yourself to get a page done that you just do not feel like doing, you decide to treat yourself to a reward when you get it done. What would that reward be?

My reward be to print the page I just finished or...chocolate! Chocolate - M&M's.

2. Do you ever use digital scrapbooking as a reward for other tasks you do not feel like doing? What tasks?

Lots of times. Getting school done, laundry, vacuuming, ironing, and the list goes on. Just about any household chore getting finished means I can take some time to work on a layout.

Okay I just had the page expire and have to start again...so give myself a reward for doing a LO I don't really want to do, no because I hardly get time for myself so when I do, I really enjoy scrapping.

and I guess I could say I use digital scrapping as a reward since when I've done house cleaning or laundry or whatever it is and the baby is sleeping, I have told myself I deserve a few minutes to work on a layout before paying the bills or answering emails.

I don't typically need to "bribe" myself to scrap -- I have to "bribe" myself to go do the other necessary things (clean the house, take a shower, etc) I usually return very quickly to the computer as soon as I get anything else done! (Like today, I couldn't wait to get home from church - I played for the 11:30 a.m. service today - and then hurried back home to my computer right after lunch with my mom and sister!)

1 & 2 I do scrap pages for the fun of it. They are my reward for living........Life can be very crazy and they give me a few minutes to focus on something other than the craziness. It's like reading a book or watching TV but much more productive. You end up with something lovely to show for the time.

#1- Yes, I reward myself by upping to my facebook for my family to see. None of them live in the same state as me so it's very rewarding to share it with them & of course I Love the feedback. Feedback is a Great motivator!
#2- No, not yet anyways lol. I'm still new to digi scrapping. I can surely see it happening in the future

My reward for finishing a layout is to post it on my blog and upload it to an online album. When I feel no creative spark, I look through my favorite scrapbooking sites for a challenge or for a layout to scraplift.

Unfortunately, generally halfway through a housekeeping task, I get an idea and head for the computer "for just a minute". Ha.

Nanscraps

***

My reward, as Nan, is to post it online! I LOVE when people watch my layout and see something they like And as Willogem wrote, Feedback is a Great motivator If I need an inspiration, I look through forum, blogs, flickr, pinterest..

I reward myself after finishing a difficult layout be either designing something fun, like a cool new button or tag - and relax with a very decadent mug of hot chocolate. I prefer Mexican chocolate, with the spices of cinnamon, cardamon, nutmeg and vanilla.

I usually put off paperwork that I need to do, by scrapping a fun layout. For example, I delayed filing my income taxes for a few days, while I worked on a blog hop layout piece. Actually, working on designs is the most favorite thing that I like to do - besides playing with the grandkids, that is!

Cabin Fever

***

1. If I'm working on a page that I really do not want to work on. I tell myself that I'm going to go shopping for a fun new element once it's finished. Yay!!!

2. I don't use scrapbooking as a reward for something else, but that's only because I hadn't thought of it. Hmmm. Maybe I'll get that closet cleaned out after all.

Off to find out where Cabin Fever is with that amazing hot chocolate. Tee Hee.

1. I'm afraid not to be very brave. When a page does not go as I want, I stop it and change my way. I choose another thema, or another hobby (music, cooking, walking...) So no job, no reward. If it is because of the difficulty to make, I'm stubborn and I finally succeed. So I can rejoice, and be proud, it is a good reward.
2. Dish, cleaning house, food shopping (I hate this).

AMarie T

***

My reward to complete a layout is to have time to go through the gallery and appreciate and get inspired by other layouts and get to know my co-scrappers here. I also look forward to the feedback on my layouts, especially because I have worked hard to do the best work I am capable to do. Sometimes-re-doing. It all takes time, the work and the enjoyment : ) End result, I feel happy!!

Question 1: My reward is the final completed page..and i strive hard until it looks perfect to me! Ofcourse i do love framing them up and hanging them on the walls of my sweet home, so that the moments remain much alive and keep me happy!

2. No...

Actually, I use scrapping as my reward for getting some other, not so fun things done around here. I do love to post in the galleries. When I first started scrapping I didn't think I'd ever bother with it but now I find that I really enjoy the comments and suggestions I receive back. I am always motivated to scrap. Lately I find that I have to remind myself to do other things as well Oma Ali

***

I love digital scrapbooking. I find i relaxing and the finished product is reward in itself. I love to share my pages, but have become selective as I only want those who appreciate them to see them. I used to always put them on Facebook, but now only a few get posted there.

No I don't use it as a reward for completing other tasks. I use it as ME time. To relax and unwind after a busy day Maggie

***

I think of scrapbooking as the reward. since it really is a relaxing thing for me. but When i splurge and buy new kits i feel like now i HAVE to use them. So they are kind of my motivator. because i love window shopping for new kits and pinterest looking for inspiration. Dez
