  • Children:
  • 1. Mary Elizabeth Rutledge (1801-1872) Married Robert Weir Freeman.
  • 2. Henry Augustus Rutledge (1805-1844) Married Caroline Nicholson. He lived in Alabama and Tennessee. He had several sons, including Henry Middleton Rutledge (born 1839) and Arthur Middleton Rutledge (born 1841). If your branch moved into Alabama or Mississippi, this is a likely path.

  • 4. Emma Rutledge (1811-1853) Married Daniel Blake.
  • 5. Arthur Middleton Rutledge (April 1, 1817-June 18, 1876) Major in the Confederate Artillery. Married Underwood/Lightner. Sarah Rutledge (1782-1855) She wrote the famous 19th-century cookbook The Carolina Housewife (1847). She never married.

Occasionally online trees list "Jackson Middleton Rutledge" as Edward's son, but Edward's own Last Will and Testament dated September 21, 1798, names only two children: his son Henry and his daughter Sarah, with his third child predeceasing him.
