John Rutledge and Sarah Hext

John Rutledge was born in 1713 to Edward Thomas Rutledge and Elizabeth Graem.

Sarah Hext was born 1724 to Hugh Hext and Sarah Boone (Hext) (thereafter Rutledge when she marries Andrew Rutledge, the brother of John Rutledge). John's older brother Andrew Rutledge (1709-1755) played a significant role in his life and the life of his children. Read more about their relationship and marriages on their parent's page: Edward Thomas Rutledge and Elizabeth Graem.

This genealogy is confusing! There are two Sarah Hexts and there are two John Rutledges! It helps to think of the two Sarah Hexts as "Mother Sarah Boone" and "Daughter Sarah Hext." Think of them as their maiden names. It helps to think of the two John Rutledges as "Dr. John" who is the father and "Atty John" (or "Constitution John") who is the son. Andrew Rutledge marries the mother, Sarah Boone Hext Rutledge, and Dr. John marries the daughter, Sarah Hext Rutledge. Is your mind boggled yet? Then there are two Edward Rutledges! Think of them as "Ireland Edward" and "Declaration Edward." Declaration Edward is the brother of Constitution John and the son of Dr. John. Got it yet?

Dr. John's Dad died in 1725. Dr. John is about 12 years old and his care is left to his brother Andrew who is about 16 years old. Dr. John wanted to be a doctor, so andrew gave him the inheritance which was slim to go to college at Trinity in Dublin, Ireland. Andrew went to London to practice law, promising to send John money to keep him at college. Andrew moves to Charleston South Carolina in 1730 and marries the widow of Hugh Hext, "Mother Sarah Boone," becoming the step-father of a wealthy heiress "Daughter Sarah Hext."

Dr. John was a doctor as a ship's surgeon in the East India merchant service and his brother Andrew Rutledge wrote to him in about 1732, when Hugh Hext died, requesting he move to Charleston. John immigrated from County Tyrone, Ireland, to South Carolina around 1735. He lived with his brother Andrew, and his wife "Mother Sarah Boone," and Sarah's young "Daughter Sarah Hext," who is now about 11 years old. He opened a doctor's office on Broad Street and put out a sign, "Dr. John Rutledge, Master of Physick."

Dr. John Rutledge marries Sarah Hext on Christmas Day, December 25, 1738, in Christ Church. The previous September she had turned 14 years old. Dr. John Rutledge was about 25 years old. This marriage moved Dr. John Rutledge up in the social status of Charleston because Sarah was a wealthy heiress.
