John Rutledge Jr. was born October 31, 1766, in Charleston, South Carolina to (Constitution|Atty) John Rutledge and Elizabeth Grimké. He died September 1, 1819, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Like his father and uncles, he was a lawyer and politician, serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. However, his personal life was marked by a high-profile scandal involving a series of letters and a duel, which impacted his later career.
John Rutledge Jr. spent much of his later life in Philadelphia and traveling for his health, which is why he passed away there rather than in Charleston. His sons maintained very close ties to the Pinckney and Motte families, often reusing those names as middle or first names in subsequent generations.
Married: Sarah Motte Smith (1770–1852) on December 26, 1791. She was the daughter of the wealthy merchant and politician Benjamin Smith and Sarah Motte.
Children:

John Rutledge III (1792-1822) Married Maria Rose. Died at age 30. Though he died young, he had a son.
Sarah Motte Rutledge (1793-1863) Married Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (son of Thomas Pinckney).
Emily Rutledge (1795-1813) Unmarried; died young.

Benjamin Smith Rutledge (September 10, 1798-April 26, 1832). Born and died in Charleston, South Carolina.
Thomas Pinckney Rutledge (1800-1838); Married Frances Maria Blake. His life ended tragically when the steamship Pulaski exploded off the coast of North Carolina. He and his wife both died, but they had a son, John Blake Rutledge (January 22, 1836-April 24, 1862). When he was only two years old in 1838, the steamship Pulaski exploded off the coast of North Carolina. Both of his parents perished in the wreck. John Blake Rutledge was saved by his nurse and a passenger who held him above the water on a piece of wreckage. As the sole survivor of his immediate family, he inherited a significant portion of the Blake and Rutledge estates and was raised by his maternal relatives (the Blakes). He never married and had no children.
Elizabeth Rutledge (1801-1828); Unmarried.
Charles Rutledge (1803-1817); Died in childhood.

Frederick Rutledge (March 1, 1805-July 7, 1884); Born in Charleston South Carolina, Died in Asheville, North Carolina. Frederick moved the family focus toward Western North Carolina (Asheville area).

Edward Augustus Rutledge (1808-1811) Died in infancy.
