Frederick Rutledge was born in March 1, 1769 to (Constitution|Atty) John Rutledge and Elizabeth Grimké in Charleston, South Carolina. He died April 12, 1821 (or 1824) in Charleston, South Carolina.
He had a large family and moved to the North Carolina mountains (Asheville/Flat Rock). This was a large and influential family.
Married: Harriott Pinckney Horry (1780–1858) on October 11, 1797. She was the daughter of Daniel Horry and Harriott Pinckney of the famous Hampton Plantation.
Children:

Edward Cotesworth Rutledge was born October 16, 1798. He died in 1860. Married Lucy Anna Holbrook. A Captain in the U.S. Navy. who remained mostly in the Charleston area. He had a son, Edward Cotesworth Rutledge Jr.

Frederick Rutledge was born October 28, 1800. He died July 7, 1884. Married Henrietta Middleton Rutledge, his cousin (daughter of Henry Middleton Rutledge). This is a major branch. He was a pioneer of the Flat Rock, North Carolina, summer colony. They had several sons, including Henry Middleton Rutledge (1839–1921), who was the father of Archibald Rutledge, the famous South Carolina Poet Laureate.
Elizabeth Pinckney Rutledge was born in 1801 and died in 1828. She was unmarried.
Harriet Pinckney Rutledge was born in 1802 and died in 1862. She married Dr. John Edwards Holbrook, a noted zoologist.
Maria Rutledge was born in 1803 and died in 1838. She married Thomas Pinckney, Jr.

Thomas Pinckney Rutledge was born in 1805 and died on June 14, 1838. Married Frances Maria Blake. Both perished in the steamship Pulaski disaster. He did have a son, John Blake Rutledge.
John Henry Rutledge was born in 1809 and died in 1830 at the age of 21.
Eliza Lucas Rutledge was born in 1810 and died in 1893. She never married.
