Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Day on the River

Every year in the Autumn the Missouri Department of Conservation aka MDC holds a Day on the River on the Mississippi River front at Cape Girardeau, Missouri. I took my Littles (Big Brother Big Sister) on September 21, 2012 and September 9, 2016. They host learning activities and information booths along the riverfront and then anyone can have an opportunity to take a boatride up the Mississippi River for a short distance and back. They usually do not go further than Trail of Tears State Park. They never go very far south on the river. It is fun to see the various known-by-land locations from the water, such as the pump house and Red Star boat dock, as well as the Cape Girardeau riverfront itself, or course. I have always felt intimidated by the Mississippi River because of its strong undercurrents that take lives, but on these boat tours I have always felt safe. It gives me a different perspective of this Mighty Mississippi.

Here are a few of the photos that are also included in the above slideshow video.

This is a cool scene of the pump house and a train rounding the curve, as well as the bridge.

This is the Red Star boat dock.

These photos from 2016 are taken with my cell phone while recording, so they are not that great. They are better in the above video, so check that out.
