First Landing on the Moon - Live viewing on family TV - July 20, 1969

My Grandpa recorded his television using silent reel during the first landing on the moon. In the 80's he converted it to VHS and recorded his voice, along with background music. The background music is not copyright friendly, so I transcribed his words on the video so that I can share it. My grandparents lived in Shrewsbury, St. Louis County, Missouri. Apollo 11 Lunar Module Eagle first landed humans on the moon on July 20, 1969. Commander Neil Armstrong and Pilot Buzz Aldrin formed the American crew.

From Vintage St. Louis & Route 66 Facebook Page: St. Louisans were glued to their TV sets as Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. St. Louis police reported an increase in burglaries that night. The moonwalk kept the crowd at the Mississippi River Festival in Edwardsville down to just 700, the smallest crowd of the season but a big crowd saw the final night of “Mame” at the Muny. It was announced that 30,000 employees at McDonnell Aircraft would be given the next day (Monday) off. St. Louis played a major role in the space program. McDonnell Aircraft built the space capsules for the Mercury and Gemini missions that tested the technology and procedures leading to the Apollo program. Mac built the training simulators used by the Mercury and Gemini astronauts, located here and at Cape Canaveral. The astronauts came to St. Louis to see the space craft being built and to use the simulators. Two Gemini astronauts, Charles Basset and Elliott See, were killed when their T-38 trainer jet crashed into Building 101 at McDonnell Aircraft on February 26, 1966. They had hit the very building where the Gemini Nine and Ten space capsules were being built. Somehow, there were no deaths inside the building. But if their plane had hit a little lower, it would have slammed straight into the assembly line, destroying Gemini IX and X and probably killing hundreds of McDonnell’s skilled spacecraft workers. Also in St. Louis, the Aeronautical Chart and Information Center (ACIC) made over 300 maps of the lunar surface for the Apollo missions. Gene Kranz was NASA’s flight director for the Gemini and Apollo missions. He studied aeronautical engineering at Parks College of St. Louis University and graduated in 1954.
