Silver Mines Recreation Area

I want to get back to Silver Mines Recreation Area as it is a great place and not too far from my home located at State Hwy D, Ironton, Missouri, between Fredericktown and Ironton off of Highway 72, and located in Madison County (although the mailing address of Ironton is in Iron County). Not far away is Millstream Gardens Conservation Area which is where the kayakers put in. In the Spring there is a whitewater kayaking on the St. Francis River is a yearly competition and folks turn out just to watch and photograph it. I have been there several times, but these photos are from October 14, 2014. Silver Mines is maintained by the US Forest Service and Millstream Gardens is maintained by the Missouri Department of Converation.

This location was used by the Einstein Silver Mining Company beginning in 1877 and ceasing mining operations completely in 1946. There is a dam, a cool old wall left over from the mining operation on the river.

There are two 1 mile trails in the recreation area, the Silver Mines Trail and the Riverside Trail, but being as these photos were so long ago, I am not sure which trail we walked. Also, from Turkey Creek Picnic Area, a 1.2 mile trail leads to Mill Stream Gardens Conservation Area, so there are lots of doable hikes in this area.

I remember that almost all the way home we had to follow this slow truck of bales of hay!
