Cape Rock Park in Cape Girardeau is a small park with an drive-up overlook of the Mississippi River. Ensign Girardot (Jean D. Girardot) established his trading post here in 1773 and the City is named after him. . Trappers and river travelers soon discovered this welcome bit of civilization and called the place "Cape Girardot." It is claimed that this is the the "world's only inland cape." A "cape" is a piece of land jutting into a large body of water. The early explorers and mapmakers used the word "cape" (or in French, "cap") quite frequently to describe the rocks that jutted out in the bluffs.

Long ago there was a rock here that jutted out into the Mississippi River. However, this rock was cut off to make way for the railroad tracks which are below. The rock that was cut off is now displayed at the park.
