Osage Village State Historic Site

Osage Village State Historic Site is in Vernon County, Missouri. As we are trying to visit something in every county of Missouri, this was it in this mostly rural county. Until we read the signs along the trail, I did not realize this side of Missouri was so heavily populated with the Osage Native Americans. We visited on August 8, 2025.

We walked the loop trail and it measured .8 of a mile. It was super hot that day and we almost did not go all the way around, but I'm glad we did.

The trail goes through prairie grass. It starts out with some gravel.

You first come to an informative area to read the information boards.

The gravel trail continues.

Then there is a short area with some boardwalk. I am guess that it gets rather wet in this area during the rainy seasons.

Then the trail continues on to a small pavilion-like structure with more information to read.

I found this map the most interesting and easy to gain an understanding of the area. The map includes Fort Carondelet which is in St. Louis County, so it covers a wide area of the State. Do not be deceived.

The loop trail is all mown grass through prairie grass.

I enjoyed the view though and my surroundings.

There are more kiosks along the trail and I shared them in the video above.

It was getting late in the day and the sun was getting low in the sky. We had one more county to hit yet before finding a place for the night to camp.

This kiosk was not that interesting, but we loved the huge tree! I asked hubby to hug it.

More of the same kind of trail, now on second half of loop.

I found this kiosk to be interesting. There is a "Blue Mound" that can be seen in the distance, which is actually on private property and not part of the state park.

Native Americans used mounds for burial and if you have visited anywhere in Missouri, Illinois, or Kentucky, you will have seen many of these areas.

The mound is somewhere over across the yonder.

I loved that we went up a hill before we started on the loop because we were high above a scenic wide-open view.

Another kiosk.

And we have gone around the loop.

Now to walk back down the hill to the truck. The girls were so hot they were collapsing to rest and we had to encourage them to make it the short distance left.
