Rather than spreading these videos out over several pages, I decided to put them all on one page. We sure did a lot on our vacation trip to Jefferson City on August 9 and 10, 2024.
Just across the street from the Missouri State Capitol is the Carnahan Memorial Garden which is in memory of Governor Mel Carnahan who was the 51st governor of Missouri from 1993 until his death in 2000. It is located next to the Governor's Mansion. It is my understanding that the current Governor walks to the Capitol every day, so he probably passes through this garden. The garden was built in the late 1930s, but was renamed after Governor Carnahan's death.
From the corner of the street, there are some stairs down into the garden.
I found these three plants to be repeated throughout the garden. The garden is very much formal in structure. There is a stone structure on the other side of the garden.
We walked up the steps and strolled the stone structure.
These three folks were hilarious! They were from St. Louis and although we did not film them, the laughter they brought as we chatted with them was memorable. What great character they possessed.
The reflection pool was fun and there were lilies in bloom.
This photo shows the capitol reflecting in the reflection pool.
We found Jefferson Landing State Historic Site to be a little bit disappointing. This Union Hotel and art gallery are closed for another 2 to 3 years because the building is unsafe. The landscape and flowers behind it were enjoyable.
Jefferson Landing is named after Thomas Jefferson, but he never landed here. I thought that was kind of lame. It is not like Lacledes Landing in St. Louis with lots of history of Mr. Laclede. This place is a nice educational place to bring children, but only if you are already in the area.
Deborah Cooper Park on Adrian's Island touts the best views in Jefferson City, especially during sunrise and sunset. I would have liked to see the sunset behind the capitol, but when we were there, there wasn't much of a sunset so I did not make the effort to go back. My feet were hurting bad by this point in the day of walking, so I limited myself to the end of the walkway and let hubby walk around some while I sat.
This is a view of the railroad tracks that run underneath the curved Bicentennial Bridge. The Amtrac runs on these rails. You can also see the bridge crossing the Missouri River.
I could see great effort in making the space a natural flower habitat. It was well done with good effort. I hope it gets better with time. There was a big metal shape of Missouri with the shape of the Missouri River running through it that can be seen from the bridge. I wanted to take the walk around, but my feet did not allow it.
The remants of the old capital randomly stuck in the ground everywhere was kind of cool.
There were hammocks by the river and I wanted to go play! Hubby was able to. He read the information on Adrian's Island and how it came to be and it was quiet interesting.
We ate lunch at the Prison Brews because it was a unique location in Jefferson City. The theme throughout the restaurant was fun and the food was good.
We attempted to eat at the classic ice cream place in Jefferson City and ended up at the Ice Cream Factory. I was surprised there were not many people eating there for it being such a destination place. I thought the ice cream was good and especially liked my lemon poppy seed ice cream on a waffle cone. I had butter pecan as the top scoop.
Later we realized that Central Dairy was the destination place and when we arrived, we realized it was directly within sight of the Ice Cream Factory! We were almost there! There was a line that never ended while we were there, and the tables were always full, and folks were eating outside. Looking across the intersection there was no one at the other place and it made me feel sad for it. Now I will say the ice cream at Central Dairy was unique in that it had a rich creaminess to it that I've not had in other ice creams. It did not make the other place bad ice cream though. I liked one for the fun flavor I had and the other for the unique quality.
