We visited Hermann on Saturday, September 24, 2024, while our son was at our house and we had a good dog sitter to be able to go to a place like this that is not super dog friendly. We are not really museum type of vacationers, nor the party type, but I wanted to get something for Gasconade County on my website map and this was it! We have been to Hermann several times before, but I guess I never took photos. I think my friend was married here as well and I have those photos somewhere.
1. Hermann Crown Suites & 1837 Cellar Bar & Grill and Streets
We stayed in the Firehouse room that was hosted by Hermann Crown Suites.
The business also runs 1837 Cellar Bar & Grill where we got a wine slushie that was free with our room and a little bit of food. There was music and a huge crowd of people. I get the feeling that the town of Hermann knows how to party. It was a nice crowd of people though. In this photo, people filled the alley all the way down to past the building in the back of the photo. We also took a walk down the street at night, but did not film it.
The next morning I filmed again walking down the street. This is looking at the Hermann Crown building with the 1837 Bar & Grill in the alley, but our place was across the street in the building with the pillars.
We walked down to the Historic Hermann Museum and it was closed. Around the corner was this Schiller House. They have three walking tours on an app that I found hard to navigate. I could not tell which walking tour this house was on quickly, so I gave up.
2. The second place we visited was Hermann Farm, which is on its own website page. We had a 30 minute horse drawn carriage ride booked, but I think hubby just did not communicate well on the phone. He had paid in advance, but apparently only paid a $10 entrance fee to a Heritage Festival that included a free horse carriage ride which was about 5 minutes. I was really disappointed.
3. Hermannoff Winery & Dierberg Star Lane.
I really liked looking at the Hermannoff Winery cellar! That was pretty awesome! I would recommend this place for visiting if you come to Hermann. We shared a flight wine tasting. They have a nice menu of things to eat as well, but hubby did not want to eat. I wanted to get food and sit at the tables in the cellar. They had tables inside and outside as well.
These are the inside tables at Hermannoff Winery.

This is the fountain at Dierberg Star Lane. We were not interested in their four wines listed on the sign, so we left. It seemed no one else was there either.
4. Caboose Museum & Tin Mill & G. Hussmann Wine Company & Black Shire Distillery & Hofgarten - These four places were all near each other and across the street from each other as we walked around.
The Caboose Museum was next door to the Tin Mill.
This looked like a really nice restaurant and I wanted to sit for a while and get some food, but again, hubby said 'no.'
Across the street was the G. Hussmann Wine Company and again, hubby said, 'no.' He was making me unhappy because when we were at the farm, he begged to eat and I suggested we eat at the next place. Then we we went to the next places and I needed to sit down and rest my feet, and was getting hungry, he kept vetoing every place! He kept pushing me to move. I had purposefully eaten a small breakfast and he knew it and yet he did not care. I did not get to eat until 3 p.m. because of his negativity. How can he go from starving and begging to eat to refusing to eat at all the next places?
We also walked around the Black Shire Distillery and he said 'no' again. Then we sat down at the fountain at the Hofgarten and planned our next thing to visit. The Hofgarten is a small corner garden.
5. Riverfront Park
This is the sign at the Visitor's Center which is in front of the Riverfront Park. It tells about the settlement of "Little Germany."
I loved that you could primitive camp along the river. I so would have done that.
6. Deutschheim State Historic Site & Gasconade Courthouse & Hermann Platz with Statue
I did not take photos of the Historic Site, but you can see it in the above video. We had missed the last tour of the two historic homes, so there was not much but the museum part to see. From the parking area we could see the copper domes on the Gasconade Courthouse really well (as seen i the above video). Out in the middle of street between the two way directional traffic was the Hermann Platz and there stood the statue of Arminius, now know as Hermann, who the City is named. He led an army of northern Europeans which annihilated three Roman legions at the Battle of Teutoburg Forest, a victory historians say changed the course of European history.
7. Historic Hermann Museum - I guess this is the only photo I took of the museum. That is funny. There is a lot more in the above video showing the museum. This place is huge and there is way more in the museum than anyone could have time to see in one visit. If you like museums and history, go visit this place.
8. Stone Hill Winery & Vintage 1847 Restaurant
Just a few miles outside the city is the Stone Hill Winery. There are trams and taxi rides that people can catch to take you all over the city and I liked that people were really using these services instead of drinking and driving. However, the crowd here was huge! We missed the tour and we did not need to do tastings as they sell this wine at our local grocery stores and everywhere else you can think of to buy wine across Missouri. I have been drinking this wine since I was illegal to drink wine! It sits at the top of a hill with a nice view. We at at the 1847 Restaurant.
This is inside the building at Stone Hill and I really wanted to get some food and wine and sit here, but that did not happen either.
This is the view from Stone Hill's outside seating area.
9. Adam Puchta Winery - we visited here and I was anxious to do so because the local grocery store sells their wine and it is touted as being better than the others and more costly. However, they had a cover charge just to enter of $10, which did cover a wine tasting. But the public transportation offered to all the party people were pouring in folks and we decided this was just a party place with no good view and not the kind of vibe we wanted to pay to enter, so we left. It also left a bad impression of the wine on me and I do not plan on buying it locally either. They can have their party crowds.
