The Terrace of French Village and Creek

We visited The Terrace at French Village on Labor Day weekend on Sunday, September 1, 2024. First we stopped by the church picnic in Silver Lake, Missouri as I have been wanting to see what it was like for years. My Gale ancestor donated the land to that church, and I have read a lot about Gale reunions at the church picnic, but there were way too many people there for me to observe any reunion going on. The food was kettle beef and chicken 'n dumplings. We waited in line for a while to eat inside, but gave up and got take-out and ate in the truck. The food was good and they had a lot more food than I would have imagined. I liked the stuffing a lot, as well as the fried chicken which was huge, and the slaw, but there was a lot more than that!

I have wanted to visit the Terrace for a while now since I also have ancestry to French Village. Rosie Elizabeth Boyer was born there, which means her parents may have been living there. Nathaniel Thomas Wright was also born there, but my brick wall of his wife I think also traces there. I have some odd DNA connections to the neighbors. Also, his parents, and especially his mother's ancestors the Shu makes, are from there. (I think I need to add pages for them). There is not much in French Village but a church, and even this winery is not really in French Village. I was told the post office for French Village used to be at the intersection at the bottom of the hill from here (Highway Y & Office Road), but even it was not in the village proper. The church is the only thing really in the village proper.

We really enjoyed the sound of the water and the views at French Village. The staff and service was great. We had zero complaints. We would certainly come back here. I also really liked the wine. So many of the wines I get at wineries have a vinegary taste to them and I understand that this is because of bad storage (wrong temperatures of storage) or aging. This wine was smooth and perfect, really enjoyable to sip.

This looked like an area set up for weddings. I believe there are rooms available here for the wedding couple too.

Traveling down Y to come home, we did the adventuring thing. I had been paying attention to the tree line driving in being certain that a creek must run along it. I believe we found the Fourche a Du Clos creek. We played here for a bit before going home. (Fourche a Du Clos has the name of Du Clos, a pioneer citizen (Fourche means "fork" in French)
