We loved our stay at the Sycamore Springs Campground on Madison County Highway 208 in Missouri. Reservations can be made on Hipcamp. Just down the road is Amidon Memorial Conservation Area, Castor River Shutins, Pink Rock, so one could camp here and visit this popular place. We stayed here on June 20, 2025.
We were at campsite 10 and the owner drove up on a UTV as soon as we arrived, even though we did not tell him when we were coming. He told us we could drive across the river and camp on the gravel bar and I was SO happy because I had been wanting to do this in our Lone Peak since we got it!
We set up our canopy for shade from the hot sun, but mostly for the girlfriends, our dogs, because they do not care for the water, but like to be able to see us when we are in the water. This was such a happy place!
This is campsite 10, or at least the part of it that is close to the path down to the water. I think I would have been content camping here as well, and when I go back, probably will just be content on this side. It had a fire pit and a picnic table, and flat grass. The one drawback is that it is right next to the dusty gravel road leading down to Castor River Shut-ins and on a nice hot day like this day, there is tons of traffic on the road. As long as we were spending day in the river, it would be okay, but I would not want to sleep in it. I think as the weather cools off, or school begins, or on a week-day, the dust from the traffic would be more tolerable.
This shows the entire wonderful camping area. There is plenty of shade for the tent.
There is our wallowing chairs, ready to go into the water! River wallowing is our favorite thing to do!
The babbling water below my window was such a treat and a delight all night long!
We forgot to pack our traditional plastic cups so it is safe to drink wine in the river and had to use our "chewy ice" cups that we picked up on the way.
