Anna Ruby Falls Recreations Area

We had expected on June 28, 2025, that this place would be like the ones we had previously visited, but it was much different in that there were SO many people! It almost seemed commercialized, although it was not. These waterfalls are in the Chatooga Ranger District. From Helen, Georgia, take Highway 74 N for one mile. Turn right onto Highway 356. Travel 1.3 miles and turn left to the entrance road to the falls. There is a $5 fee per person.

Two creeks, the Curtis and the York meet almost at the same place, running off the cliff for a 50 foot drop. The waterfalls jointly are called Anna Ruby Falls, named after the only daughter of James H. "Captain" Nichols, a retired Colonel in the Civil War who settled in the Nacoochee valley in 1870.

The trail is short, being .4 miles in length, and back again. It is paved.

We had been trying to get to South Carolina, but did not make it the day before and camped nearby at Jenny's Creek Campground. They had given us a few places to visit and this was the first one. We said several times that "Georgia really showed up" as we enjoyed everything we visited in this area of Georgia.

You see the joined water through a creek throughout the walk. There are signs not to get in the water, but people did anyway.

At the base of the falls are two observation decks to enjoy viewing the amazing falls. You cross the boardwalk between the two which also gives another great view of the falls.

I promised myself I would take more photos of myself in 2025. My hair is a mess as we had already hiked two other locations in the day in the hot weather.

This is a shot from the boardwalk between the two observation decks.

This is some old block holding up the boardwalk!

This is the view from the closer observation deck.

Another selfie from the closer observation deck.

On the way back, I snapped this photo.
