Hunter Dawson State Historic Site

We visited the Hunter-Dawson State Historic Site on February 4, 2023. It is located at 312 Dawson Rd, New Madrid, New Madrid County, Missouri. With not as many visitors on a cold, icy February day, our guide was kind to give us a long and thorough tour of the house. Please enjoy the above video.

Most of the original furnishings purchased by Amanda Hunter, the house's first owner are still in the house (about 80% in the home). Amanda's husband William Washington Hunter died of yellow fever before he had a chance to live in the house and was a wealthy and influential person. William came to New Madrid by way of Potosi, Missouri, but was originally a was a Virginian. William was a merchant, farmer, and real estate investor. The house is 15-rooms and was constructed between 1859 and 1860.

Amanda's daughter Ella Hunter and her husband William Dawson inherited the house in 1876 and the house remained in the family until 1958. The City purchased the house in 1966 before donating itto the State of Missouri.
