La Petite Gemme Prairie is in Polk County, Missouri, just south of Bolivar, and is part of the Missouri Prairie Foundation. Did not know we had this Foundation here in Missouri? Do see their website to find all of their prairies. It is a great thing the group is doing. We visited on August 8, 2025.
Missouri Prairie Foundation acquired this prairie in 1974. La Petite Gemme Prairie takes its name, meaning little gem, from the French heritage of Missouri.
This is not any place to drive a long distance to visit, but if you are in the area, it is a nice place to see. There were many more different types of flowers than I imagined, and I could not identify most of them. I stopped and filmed in the above video many of what I saw. The mown path was short.
We made it to the end of the mown path and found the Frisco Highline Trail that is a walking and bike trail from Springfield to Bolivar. We do have electric bikes and if we had them with us, we sure would have loved to bike this trail! It looks to be a good one! The Frisco Highline trail is 35 miles long and the prairie is at marker 32.
The prairie is in a square shape.
We made it back to the parking area. It is a small parking area.
