Echo Bluff State Park

Echo Bluff State Park, June 24, 2017

Echo Bluff State Park is a newer Missouri State Park having opened in July 30, 2016 and our first visit was June 24, 2017. Echo Bluff is off of Highway 19 in Shannon County. I remember a lot of controversy in social media which had something to do with the park having formerly been Camp Zoe, a camp for girls, and that the State did a raw deal to obtain the park. Social media encouraged everyone to boycott the park.

The park does have a nice area on Sinking Creek to wallow and enjoy the bluffs, as well as some other trails. However, there are a lot of cabins and expensive housing making this a park for rich people, or it seems to us, because we cannot afford those options.

Since we had our dogs with us, we could not go inside the building, but were able to eat out of the patio with them under our table. The food was nothing to right home about, but it was good enough that I would eat it again.

One of the things that Echo Bluff has become known for is being one of the places that you can find the "Wild Horses of Shannon County." The horses tend to become familiar with people and come up close to the campers. As a "wild" animal, this is not safe. Although they feel safe, they are still wild and anything could happen. Folks need to be careful. There has been social media buzz from time to time that the powers that be are going to remove them from the park. If you want them to stay, keep your distance and respect them as a wild animal.

I have selected only a few photos to put here on the page. To see them all, watch the video above.

I loved photographying the horses against the Autumn foilage.

The horses tend to hang out by this building which I believe used to be the mess hall lodge for Camp Zoe. I could be remembering that wrong and that be in another place and this be a cabin for Camp Zoe.

I took a close up of this horse's mane because I noted that someone had taken the time to braid it. If it is a wild horse, why was the hair braided? That took a long time to do.

Little did I know when I took this photo that it would be a special one for me. This is the place where I met fellow photographer Wanda Parsons and we have remained online friends ever since, enjoying each other's photos and posts. She really is a great photographer!

This is the bluff that embraces Sinking Creek. The creek is right below the rock that you see here.

One of my favorite things to do is to hold up Autumn leaves against the blue sky and snap photos.

It looks so different in the Autumn than in the Summer. I love visiting places at different times of the year.

I remember camping and it feeling awkward because we were the lone tent campers among the RV'rs, sticking out like a sore thumb, and there was no shade. It was a new park so the trees did not have an opportunity to grow. It was not something I wanted to do again. The only tent sites were walk-in and we like to tent camp out of our vehicle. The idea of carrying our gear down into a walk-in was not something we wanted to do. However, we did enjoy the evening sunset hitting the hill and the sky behind it.

The first place we visited in 2017 was the water under the bridge. It was certainly a perfect wallow spot.

Down from the main building is where most folks enjoy the beauitufl water of Sinking Creek.
