There is nothing like having a friend who is taking the same journey as you to lean on, to vent, and to share joys. I praise God each time He places me with like-minded friends. It is such a comfort to know I am not alone in my situation. It is such an encouragement to be in agreement with another.

I enjoy the story of Mary and Elizabeth. Reading Luke 1:35-40, Mary is told that her unborn child will be called the “Son of God” and immediately thereafter learns that her relative, Elizabeth, is already pregnant, being six months along. What is the first thing Mary did? She took a long journey walking to greet Elizabeth. Mary wanted to be with Elizabeth who was experiencing the same situation as herself, both having received a miracle pregnancy from God. Mary and Elizabeth surely were anxious to share how nothing is impossible with God. Mary was too young and Elizabeth was too old and yet age did not matter, only commonality.

I ask myself, “What great lengths do I go to be with like-minded women?” Mary walked 70 to 100 miles. I cannot imagine walking from Cape Girardeau to St. Louis. I often yearn for like-minded friends. I have many friends and I thank God for them, but most do not have the same hobbies or interests as I do. How do I find new friends? How much effort and how far do I go to meet and keep new friends? Mary’s journey gives me encouragement to stop wishing and start moving. Mary’s example gives me a drive to muster up some braveness to get out there, make the first move, start the first conversation, be myself, and stop worrying what people think about me.

Luke 1:35-40 And the angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For nothing will be impossible with God." And Mary said, "Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her. In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.
