8. Who was born in a stable as the ultimate stability?

I am a homebody. I tend to like just staying at home and enjoying my surroundings. Sometimes I get cravings to get out and explore and see new things, but most often I just like to be at home. I find comfort in stability. I do not like to change jobs in an effort to move up financially, but would rather stay in the comfort and security of knowing my income and living within my means. I do enjoy eating out, but if I do not feel like cooking, often I would rather my husband run out and grab a meal to bring home. My home provides me shelter, comfort, security, and stability.

Joseph and Mary took a long journey to Bethlehem because of the census. They were seeking shelter, a place of comfort and security for Mary to give birth. Where did their journey end? Where did they find shelter? A stable. Well, it does not actually say “stable” in the Bible, but with a manger and feeding animals, we traditionally impose a graphic of a stable to be the fitting scene. Regardless of the actual structure, Joseph and Mary found what they were seeking, a place of shelter, a place of comfort, a place of security, even if just a temporary place.

We may have those times in our lives when we feel very unstable and uncertain. What a comfort it is to know that we have Jesus, who was born in a stable, as the ultimate stability for all. “For who is God, but the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God?” (Psalm 18:31). When the unknown seems scary, we can always turn to the known that never changes and is as stable as a rock.
